The Department of Information and Communications Technology or DICT, installed WiFi sites around the main campus and external campuses, as part of their project Free WiFi for All.
The installation of WiFi sites' purpose is for the online classes during the pandemic when the University shifted to distance learning.
Now that face-to-face classes returned and fully implemented again, BulSU students should make use of this free WiFi, since smartphones are often used not primarily for entertainment but for educational purposes as well.
The problem lies in the internet speed, if it can hold the number of BulSU students around the main campus, with approximately 30,000 students.
There are students and also faculty members in BulSU who depend on the internet connection, but what is supposed to be a reliable, convenient tool holds it back.
A student from CSSP whose name he refused to give, when asked whether or not he is connected to the free WiFi around campus, said no.
"Sinusubukan kong mag log-in pero wala pa rin internet"... He was unable to connect due to the fact that it actually has no connection at all or the speed is slow. "... Wala akong ma-access na mga site," he added.
It became a burden to students, as only limited people have access to the free WiFi, and once connected, will give limited time as well before you are forced to disconnect.
The CSSP student suggested adding personnel from different departments to fix or maybe ease this internet dilemma in the campus, "Maaaring maglaan ang mga department ng karagdagang tao na mag aasikaso sa problema"... the internet capability of the campus can't accommodate the number of students, "... dahil sa laki ng populasyon sa unibersidad, kakaunti lamang ang maaaring maka access sa libreng wifi"... he states.
There are students who still are unaware of the free WiFi installed around campus, but even if they knew it would not matter, as the internet speed is slow and limited for people to connect to anyway.
"... Maaari rin na magkaroon ng karagdagang pagpapaalala sa mga estudyante na mayroong libreng wifi sa campus kasi marami parin ang hindi nakaka alam sa serbisyong ito." he stated.
The students and faculties have no other choice but to charge themselves with mobile data subscriptions.
The education sector is slowly shifting to the digital medium, and part of it is the reliance on internet connection.
The budget for this project seemed to be insufficient or some of it goes to where it is confidential out of our reach.
By having just enough internet capability could be a game changer, and can keep up to the continuous growth in digital age.
